IS is "Herod of today"- Archbishop of Canterbury

United Kingdom

The Islamic State Group is the “Herod of today” and “threatens to eradicate Christians” in the Middle East, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has said.

The spiritual leader of 80 million Anglicans in the world in his Christmas sermon on Friday also said that to those who have been, or are being “dehumanized by the tyranny and cruelty” of IS, “God’s judgment comes as good news, because it promises justice”.

The archbishop was delivering his sermon at Canterbury Cathedral. He said in confidence that these are the last days and “using force and indescribable cruelty, they [IS] seem to welcome all opposition with certainty of unleashing warfare which confirms that these are indeed the end times.”

“They hate difference, whether it is Muslims who think differently, Yazidis or Christians; and because of them Christians face elimination in the very region in which Christian faith began.”

“This apocalypse is defined by themselves and heralded only by the angel of death.”
